The semitone B is a semitone lower than B, for example. ![]() When you see a sharp sign, you must play the note that is one half step (semitone) higher. The black keys on your piano can be either sharp or flat. This symbol is used to indicate that a note should be played one half-step lower than its natural pitch. When typed in this way, the symbol for flat appears as a small, raised “b” with a horizontal line through its center. The musical symbol for flat is typically typed as a lowercase “b” with a superscripted “0” (b0). ![]()
